Description
When the Denver Mint prepared working dies for 1938 cent production, each die received its D mintmark by hand — a punch operator aligning and striking a steel letter into the die face. WRPM-004 records one instance where the initial D impression did not satisfy the operator, prompting a second strike that left a ghost of the first attempt alongside the corrected final placement. Repunched mintmarks from the late 1930s are among the most accessible pre-war varieties for Lincoln cent collectors, as mintages remained high and the coins circulated widely. This variety carries cross-references from three independent cataloging systems: CONECA RPM #4, Coppercoins 1938D-1MM-004, and Wexler Variety ID 1938-D 1¢ WRPM-004. Each system examined the die independently and assigned the variety its own catalog number, and agreement across all three confirms the repunch as genuine.
