1938-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cataloged as UVC-064, DMR-006, this 1938 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a repunched mintmark with traces of the initial D punch position visible alongside the corrected placement. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in EDS, Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Struck in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc at the Denver Mint, the 1938-D Wheat Cent comes from a year that also saw the introduction of the Jefferson Nickel, which replaced the Buffalo Nickel series. Repunched mintmarks on late 1930s Lincoln Cents resulted from the continued use of hand-punched mintmarks on individual working dies, a practice that remained standard at all branch mints. The three documented die stages allow collectors to track the progressive wear of this die pair, with early die state examples preserving the strongest evidence of the secondary D impression for clear attribution.
