1938-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Wheat Cent from 1938 displays a repunched D mintmark whose visibility fades across die states. Die markers: UVC-063, DMR-005. Stage A: Strong secondary mintmark — EDS; reverse is EDS. Stage B: MDS (unconfirmed). Stage C: Weak secondary mintmark — LDS; reverse is LDS. The progression from strong to weak secondary D across die states shows how continued striking pressure erodes the shallow remnant left by the initial misplaced punch. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin/zinc, weighing 3.11 g with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 1938-D was struck during the last full year before World War II transformed European politics and would eventually reshape U.S. Mint production priorities.
