Description

Buffalo nickel repunched mintmark varieties reward patient cherrypickers, and the 1937-S RPM-006 is a solid representative on this popular final-year issue. Assigned VarietyVista codes UVC-213 and DMR-007, the variety shows a San Francisco mintmark punched, then re-entered, leaving a secondary impression visible beneath the primary S. Buffalo nickels were struck in 75% copper / 25% nickel and designed by James Earle Fraser, whose iconic portrayal of a Native American chief and an American bison remains one of the most admired American coin designs. Die state progression spans three documented stages: Stage A (EDS) shows a circular die scratch from the left mound to the mintmark, with the obverse also in EDS. Stage B records both faces in MDS. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. Identifying the repunching requires 5x-10x magnification; the mintmark was hand-applied during this era, making positional variation the rule. RPM-006 is a discrete working die distinct from other S-mintmark repunchings catalogued for the 1937 Buffalo nickel and should not be conflated with them.
