1937-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

An S/S North variety from the penultimate year of James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel, this VarietyVista-documented RPM-004 pairs a repunched mintmark with an obverse listed as DDO-002, creating a dual-variety coin. Die markers UVC-211 / DMR-005 track four stages: Stage A with a strong secondary mintmark at EDS, die scratches in C of CENTS, and the obverse listed as DDO-002 at EDS; Stage B with a medium secondary mintmark at MDS; Stage C with a light secondary mintmark at LMDS; Stage D with a very light secondary mintmark at LDS and obverse at LDS. The systematic attenuation from strong through medium, light, and very light documents how die wear progressively flattened the displaced S impression. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1937-S had a mintage of approximately 5.6 million pieces.
