1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Exhibiting a triple-punched mint mark with D/D/D East, Serifs — three overlapping D impressions shifted eastward with the serifs particularly affected — this 1937-D Washington Quarter RPM-002 is an uncommon example of triple repunching on a Depression-era silver quarter. Triple-punched mintmarks required three misaligned impressions during die preparation, a level of imprecision decidedly less common than standard repunching. Struck in 90% silver at Denver when quarter mintages remained well below postwar peaks. Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-0070 and DMR-004, the variety has been tracked across three die states: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C with both sides in late die state. The late-die-state confirmation is notable because die wear can either obscure or paradoxically highlight repunching — as surrounding elements soften, overlapping mintmark impressions sometimes become more distinct. The eastward displacement with serif emphasis creates a characteristic spreading pattern on the right side of each D impression.
