1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Cataloged as UVC-201, DMR-007, this 1937 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel displays a repunched mintmark with evidence of the initial D punch visible alongside the final position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B shows the reverse in MDS while the obverse is LDS, an unusual mismatch indicating the obverse die had accumulated more wear than the reverse die it was paired with. Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1937-D represents a high-mintage year for the Buffalo Nickel at Denver, and multiple RPM varieties have been cataloged for this date reflecting the volume of working dies prepared. James Earle Fraser's design, featuring a composite Native American portrait and an American bison modeled after Black Diamond from the Central Park Zoo, remained in production through 1938. RPM-006 offers a distinct die pair from RPM-004 on the same date, giving variety collectors multiple attribution targets to search for among 1937-D Buffalo Nickels.
