1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cataloged as UVC-199, DMR-005, this 1937 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel exhibits a repunched mintmark where traces of the initial D punch position remain visible near the corrected placement. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B shows an unusual die-state pairing where the reverse is MDS while the obverse is LDS, indicating the obverse die had seen more production use than its reverse counterpart. Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1937-D Buffalo Nickel is a penultimate-year issue of James Earle Fraser's acclaimed design. The Denver Mint produced substantial quantities in 1937, and the 1937-D is also notable as the date that includes the famous "3-Legged" variety. Repunched mintmark varieties on Buffalo Nickels resulted from hand-punching the D onto each working die, and the mismatched die states in Stage B offer collectors a window into how the Mint managed die pairings during this high-production period.
