1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

RPM-001 is the primary repunched mintmark variety for the 1936-S Washington Quarter, catalogued UVC-0057 and DMR-003 across three documented die stages. Stage A is the early die state of the reverse. Stage B introduces a light die crack across the upper hair as a mid die state obverse marker, paired with a mid die state reverse. Stage C is the late die state. The Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver — the composition used through 1964 — at the San Francisco Mint under John Flanagan's design; the 1936-S issue was an early production year in the series, which had debuted just six years earlier in 1932. Repunched mintmarks arise when the hand-applied mintmark punch contacts the die at a slightly incorrect position before being repositioned; the residual displaced impression remains in the die and appears as a secondary mintmark shadow on struck coins. Die-marker examination of both DMR-003 diagnostic points and the Stage B die crack across the upper hair are the primary tools for confirming this variety and sequencing examples within the die progression.
