Description

Two cross-reference systems document this 1936 Lincoln wheat cent rim cud: JCc-36_197 in the Jefferson Cud Census and LC-36-5 in the Large Cud numbering, both recorded on October 1, 2013. The LC-36-5 designation identifies this as the fifth cataloged large cud for the 1936 date — a significant number that indicates substantial rim failures across that year's production. Philadelphia struck over 309 million cents in 1936, a figure reflecting the economic recovery of the mid-Depression era when demand for small denomination coinage was rising but had not yet reached the wartime peaks of the early 1940s. Cuds on Depression-era wheat cents occupy an interesting collector niche because mintages, while large by pre-1930 standards, were modest enough that individual die pairs saw heavy but not extreme use. The development of five cataloged cuds for a single date suggests that some combination of die steel quality, press speed, and production run length pushed multiple dies to terminal failure at the rim. Brenner's wheat cent obverse, with its thirteen-star border, motto text, and protruding date at the 6:00 position, places several thin die wall areas near the periphery — structural weak points where cracks initiate and propagate outward to form the die fragments that leave cud marks.
