Description
The 1936 Norfolk Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 16,936, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Issued in 1936 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Norfolk as a Royal Borough in 1736 and the 300th anniversary of the original land grant of 1636. The obverse features the Norfolk city seal featuring a three-masted ship and a plow, surrounded by the inscription CITY OF NORFOLK VIRGINIA, while the reverse displays the Royal Mace of Norfolk, presented to the borough by Lieutenant Governor Robert Dinwiddie in 1753. Designed by William Marks Simpson & Marjorie Emory Simpson. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9337. The Norfolk Half Dollar had a mintage of 16,936 pieces, making it a moderately scarce single-year issue. It was designed by the husband-and-wife team of William Marks and Marjorie Emory Simpson.
