Description
The 1936 Long Island Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 81,826 examples. Issued in 1936 to mark the 300th anniversary of the first permanent European settlement on Long Island in 1636. The obverse features conjoined busts of a Dutch settler and a Native American of the Algonquin tribe, representing the two cultures that shaped early Long Island, while the reverse displays a Dutch sailing vessel, representing the ships that brought European settlers to Long Island in the 1630s. Designed by Howard Kenneth Weinman. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9322. With a mintage of 81,826, the Long Island Half Dollar is one of the more available 1936 commemoratives. It was designed by Howard Kenneth Weinman, son of the famous sculptor Adolph A. Weinman who designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and Mercury Dime.
