Description

The 1936 (D) Columbia Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Denver Mint. With a mintage of just 8,009, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. Issued in 1936 to celebrate the sesquicentennial of Columbia, South Carolina, which was established as the state capital in 1786. The obverse features justice holding scales and a sword, standing before the South Carolina State Capitol building in Columbia, while the reverse displays a palmetto tree, the state symbol of South Carolina, flanked by the dates 1786 and 1936. Designed by A. Wolfe Davidson. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9292. Produced in PDS sets with approximately 8,000-9,000 pieces per mint, the Columbia Half Dollar is moderately scarce. The palmetto tree reverse connects it to South Carolina's rich Revolutionary War heritage.
