1935-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Struck at the San Francisco Mint during the heart of the Great Depression, the 1935-S Mercury Dime RPM-002 preserves a southward repunched mintmark where the S was punched into the reverse die, then repositioned and punched again, leaving remnants of the first impression visible below the final placement. During this era, mintmarks were individually hand-punched into working dies by engravers at each branch mint facility, and slight misalignments between successive punches were common. The directional notation "S/S South" indicates that the initial S impression sits south (below) the final accepted position, creating a shadow or doubling effect visible under magnification near the base of the letter. Adolph Weinman's Mercury Dime design, formally known as the Winged Liberty Head, was in its nineteenth year of production in 1935, and the San Francisco facility was producing dimes in relatively modest quantities compared to Philadelphia. The small S mintmark, located on the reverse near the base of the fasces, was applied by hand to each individual die, ensuring that no two mintmark placements were identical and that repunching events produced unique positional variants. RPM-002 represents the second cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1935-S date, indicating at least two distinct dies received misaligned punches. Specimens remain sought after by Mercury Dime variety specialists who prize the series for its elegant Art Deco design and the rich array of mintmark varieties produced across its 1916-1945 production span.
