1935 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die classification UVC-1329 with marker reference DMR-008, this 1935 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a doubled die reverse with strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots flanking the denomination, and both wheat ears and stems. The die progressed through multiple stages: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the reverse in mid die state with a light die crack developing over V.D.B. (Victor David Brenner's initials at the base of the reverse), and Stage C in late die state is also unconfirmed. The die crack over V.D.B. at Stage B serves as a key diagnostic for determining die state, as specimens without this crack likely represent earlier impressions from the same die. Philadelphia struck over 245 million cents in 1935, providing an enormous population from which varieties can emerge. The strong-class doubling designation indicates that the extra thickness on the reverse legends and wheat ears is clearly visible under standard magnification, making DDR-003 one of the more rewarding doubled die reverses to examine from the mid-1930s Wheat Cent production.
