Description
The 1935 Boone Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of just 10,000, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. Authorized in 1934 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Daniel Boone, the legendary American frontiersman who blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and founded Boonesborough, Kentucky. The obverse features a bust of Daniel Boone facing left, wearing a coonskin cap and buckskin shirt, while the reverse displays Daniel Boone and Chief Blackfish standing together, with a stockade fort and the inscription PIONEER YEAR in the background. Designed by Augustus Lukeman. Produced at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco with mintages around 10,000 each. A 'small 1934' reverse variety also exists for 1935. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9258. The Daniel Boone series offers an affordable entry into multi-year commemoratives, though completing a full set of all date-mint combinations requires dedication. The frontier subject matter and detailed design by Augustus Lukeman make it a collector favorite.
