1934-P VAM-1K

Description

Discovered in April 2021 by Carnell Horimoto, the 1934-P VAM-1K Peace Dollar carries the classification 1K III1 - B2a (Die Rust Pitting Reverse), documenting an advanced state of die surface degradation caused by moisture exposure and corrosion. The obverse (III1) shows a few raised die pitting spots at the front of Liberty's eye — small bumps on the struck coin corresponding to corrosion pits in the die face where rust attacked the steel surface. The reverse (B2a) exhibits heavy die rust pitting concentrated at the upper right and lower left fields, with lighter pitting at the upper left, indicating uneven moisture exposure across the die face that caused more severe corrosion in some areas than others. The die was likely retired shortly after this state developed, suggesting the mint recognized the surface quality had degraded below acceptable production standards. Notably, the discovery piece itself displays odd and extensive laminations with multiple raised lumps that could be compressed by touch — planchet defects unrelated to the die variety but documented in the VAMWorld commentary, which notes that the listing is "questionable at best" due to concerns about the discovery specimen's overall condition. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design features a radiant Liberty head on the obverse and a perched bald eagle before rays of sunlight on the reverse, symbolizing peace following World War I. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1934 — one of the final years of the series before it concluded in 1935 — the coin is composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. Die rust pitting varieties document the environmental challenges faced in die storage and handling, where humidity in mint facilities could initiate corrosion on unused or resting die faces.
