1934-P VAM-1I
Error
Description
Evidence of Mint die maintenance practices from the 1930s is preserved on this 1934-P Peace Dollar, where VAM-1I documents light vertical die file lines in the obverse field opposite Liberty's nose and forehead. Discovered in 2016 and classified as 1I II1 B2a (Die File Lines Left Obverse Field) with importance I-2 and rarity R-5, this variety reveals that Mint workers filed the die surface to remove die rust — oxidation that formed on the steel die during storage or between production runs. The filing was performed with enough care to remove the rust but not with sufficient thoroughness to eliminate the striation marks left by the filing tool, and these parallel lines became a permanent part of the die surface, transferring as raised marks to every coin subsequently struck. The 1934-P Peace Dollar holds particular numismatic significance as part of the final chapter of the Peace Dollar series. After a five-year hiatus following the 1928-S issue, Peace Dollar production resumed in 1934 at Philadelphia and San Francisco, with the 1934-P mintage reaching approximately 954,000 coins — a relatively modest figure that makes all 1934-P die varieties inherently less common than those from high-mintage dates. The R-5 rarity rating of 31 to 75 known specimens reflects both the moderate mintage and the specific nature of die rust repairs that affected only individual dies for limited portions of their working lives. Anthony de Francisci's portrait of Liberty, whose profile dominates the obverse, appears against the field area where these filing marks are most visible — the smooth open space providing contrast that makes the die file lines readily apparent under moderate magnification.
