Description

Circumferential die lines sweeping around the lower obverse periphery distinguish this 1934 Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar — the penultimate year of the series before production ceased in 1935. VAM-1H carries plate notation 1H II1 - B2a with importance I-2 and rarity R-5 (scarce). The obverse die lines trace a continuous arc near the periphery around the lower portion of the design, a pattern consistent with lathe polish marks — concentric scratches left when a die is polished on a rotating fixture. Such circumferential lines run parallel to the die's edge rather than in random directions, giving them a distinctive curved geometry. Reverse die B2a contributes its own diagnostic: a fine, faint thread-like die impression below the eagle's beak, a delicate feature requiring magnification to confirm. The 1934 Peace Dollar was struck in reduced numbers compared to the peak production years of the 1920s, and die varieties from the final two years of Peace Dollar coinage carry enhanced interest because the smaller production window means fewer die pairs were employed.
