Description

Discovered by Thomas Petrosie in 2014, VAM-1G on the 1934 Peace Dollar preserves several wavy circumferential die lines running from IN through the date area and over to TRVST on the lower obverse. Circumferential die lines — concentric arc-shaped marks following the curvature of the die face — are distinctive die preparation artifacts that differ from straight file lines or random scribbling scratches. Their curved trajectory indicates they were likely produced during rotational polishing of the die surface. Classified as die pair II1 on the obverse and B2a on the reverse under the Van Allen-Mallis system, this variety carries an R-5 rarity rating with an estimated 13 to 30 specimens known and interest level I-2. The 1934 Philadelphia issue was the final regular-issue Peace Dollar before the brief 1935 conclusion of the series, and the obverse retains the Latin TRVST spelling — a deliberate artistic choice by Anthony de Francisci using the Roman V in place of U. Collectors searching for VAM-1G should examine the lower obverse from IN GOD WE TRUST through the date, looking for characteristic wavy arcs that distinguish circumferential lines from other die preparation marks.
