Description

Discovered in 2012 by David Close, the 1934-P VAM-1E "Die File Lines Neck" Peace dollar documents horizontal and diagonal die file lines on Liberty's neck and in the field above the numeral 3 in the date on Anthony de Francisci's obverse. Cataloged as 1E II1 - B2a (Die File Lines Neck) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-5 (approximately 30-75 known), this variety sits in the scarce range where confirmed examples surface infrequently despite active collector searching. Philadelphia struck approximately 954,057 Peace dollars in 1934 — one of the lowest mintages in the entire series, surpassed only by the 1928 Philadelphia issue — making any documented variety for this date inherently interesting to the VAM collecting community. The die file lines result from the finishing process applied to working dies before they entered production at the Philadelphia Mint: workers used fine files and abrasive tools to smooth the die surface and remove unwanted marks from the hubbing process, and occasionally these filing strokes left traces that transferred as shallow incuse lines on struck coins. The horizontal and diagonal orientation of the file lines on Liberty's neck provides a distinctive diagnostic pattern, while the additional file lines in the field above the 3 offer a secondary confirmation point. Anthony de Francisci's Liberty portrait features smooth, flowing contours on the neck area that readily reveal any linear markings from the die preparation process. Collectors pursuing VAM-1E should use at least 15x magnification with raking light angled across Liberty's neck, looking for the characteristic parallel or semi-parallel incuse lines that distinguish die file marks from circulation wear or contact marks.
