1934-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1934-D RPM-002 Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a D/D South repunched mintmark where the initial D impression was placed slightly north of its intended position and a corrective second punch shifted the final placement southward, with the obverse paired as ODV-002. Die markers UVC-0695 / DMR-010 track three progressive die states: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with both reverse and obverse at MDS; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The 1934-D Washington Quarter occupies a historically significant position as one of the earliest Denver Mint issues in the series, since the Washington Quarter debuted in 1932 with only Philadelphia and Denver production, skipped 1933 entirely due to Depression-era reduced demand, and resumed in 1934 at both mints plus San Francisco. The D/D South displacement pattern on this RPM-002 documents the manual mintmark application process used at the Philadelphia Mint, where working dies destined for Denver received their D mintmark by hand punch before being shipped west for use in production. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's bust of George Washington, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm. The 1934-D had a relatively modest mintage compared to later dates, making it a coin already sought by series collectors.
