1932-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1932-S 25¢ WRPM-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1, this Washington Silver Quarter displays a repunched S mintmark on the reverse — the primary RPM listing for one of the most important key dates in the entire Washington Quarter series. The reverse die marker includes a series of north-northeast to south-southwest die scratches to the right of the primary mintmark, providing diagnostic identification beyond the repunched mintmark itself. A significant note in the attribution commentary indicates that the doubling visible on the right side of the mintmark is mechanical doubling (strike doubling) rather than genuine repunching — a critical distinction because mechanical doubling is caused by die bounce during the striking process and is not a true die variety, meaning the actual RPM component must be identified separately from the machine doubling artifact. The 1932-S Washington Quarter is the key date of the entire Washington Quarter series, with a mintage of only 408,000 pieces — the lowest regular-issue mintage in the series that ran from 1932 through 1998 in its original design. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter obverse based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's celebrated bust of George Washington, with a heraldic eagle reverse. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, the 1932-S is a conditionally rare coin where even circulated examples command significant premiums. The combination of the series' key date status with WRPM-001 creates a variety that sits at the intersection of date-rarity and variety collecting, appealing to both mainstream Washington Quarter collectors and variety specialists.
