Description
Holding the lead catalog position for the scarce 1931-S Buffalo Nickel (mintage only 1.2 million), this RPM-001 was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers: UVC-127, DMR-004. Stage A: Reverse and obverse are EDS. Stage B: Die crack north from buffalo's head to upper U of UNITED — MDS; obverse is MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The die crack from the bison's head to UNITED documents a stress fracture propagating through the reverse's central design zone. Fraser's iconic design was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm). The 1931-S is among the lowest-mintage dates in the Buffalo Nickel series, making die varieties on this issue inherently scarcer in absolute terms.
