Error
Description
An S/S/S North, West triple-punched mintmark from the San Francisco Mint, this 1930-S Buffalo Nickel was documented by VarietyVista and awaits specimen submission for new color, high-magnification digital photographs. Die markers UVC-123 / DMR-009 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS and die scratches southeast under the chin at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The triple S/S/S pattern documents three separate punch contacts producing overlapping secondary impressions in north and west directions. The chin die scratches at Stage B provide an obverse attribution marker. James Earle Fraser's iconic design was struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm. The 1930-S had a mintage of approximately 5.4 million pieces, a relatively modest figure that limits the total RPM population for this date.
