1930-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Late in the Buffalo Nickel series, San Francisco Mint production in 1930 continued with the hand-applied mintmark process that had characterized the entire run. The 1930-S RPM-005 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-121 and DMR-007. The mintmark displacement is S/S North, with the primary final S positioned north of the earlier punch, leaving the ghost impression at the south. Stage A (EDS) documents the reverse in LDS condition while the obverse remains at EDS — again reflecting a reverse die that entered service before the obverse die with which it was paired. Stage B (MDS) and Stage C (LDS) are both unconfirmed. The 1930-S Buffalo Nickel was produced toward the end of the series' productive era; the design would continue through 1938 but mintages and die variety documentation thin considerably in the early 1930s due to reduced production volumes. The S/S North repunching pattern on RPM-005 is consistent with the northward drift seen on other 1930-S mintmark varieties and reflects normal variation in the punch-application process used at San Francisco during this period. Collectors should examine the southern base of the S mintmark for the secondary ghost impression.
