1930-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

The 1930-S Buffalo Nickel RPM-004 is an S/S West repunched mintmark variety documented by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-120 and DMR-006. The mintmark was initially punched and a second punch displaced slightly to the west produced the repunched impression, visible to the east of the accepted final mintmark position. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B (MDS, confirmed), and Stage C (LDS, unconfirmed). The 1930-S Buffalo Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the Depression era, a year that saw reduced mintage levels across the cent and nickel series. James Earle Fraser's iconic design features his composite Native American portrait on the obverse and the standing bison on a mound on the reverse — the mound reverse having replaced the original flat-ground design after 1913. New high-magnification, color digital photographs are needed to confirm the EDS and LDS stage attributions for this variety.
