Description

This retained cud on the 1930-S Standing Liberty Quarter is cataloged as RCD-25c-1930S-02 — the second documented retained cud for the final year of one of America's most celebrated coin designs. The Standing Liberty Quarter series ran from 1916 through 1930, after which the Washington Quarter took its place beginning in 1932, making 1930-S a last-year-of-issue coin that already commands collector attention. A retained cud occurs when a section of the die fractures at the rim and the broken piece remains lodged in the press, producing a flat, raised area on struck coins where the displaced fragment obscures the original design. This variety also exhibits reverse die cracks, which serve as additional attribution markers and document the progressive deterioration of the die face leading up to the retained cud formation. Retained cuds on Standing Liberty Quarters are considerably scarcer than their Lincoln Cent counterparts simply because quarter production volumes were far lower, meaning fewer dies were used and fewer die failures were generated.
