1929-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

San Francisco struck 50.1 million Lincoln Wheat Cents in 1929, and among those millions at least nine distinct repunched mintmark varieties have been documented — WRPM-009 being the ninth in the Wexler catalog. On this variety the S mintmark was punched into the reverse die and then repunched with a northwest offset, producing an S/S Northwest configuration where traces of the original S appear displaced beneath and to the right of the final impression. During the hand-punching era, a Mint employee would position the small steel mintmark punch over the working die and strike it with a mallet; if the first impression landed slightly off target, a corrective second blow was applied, permanently recording both positions in the die steel. The primary obverse die marker is a short die gouge running from north to south inside the upper loop of the N in IN, a feature useful for confirming attribution when the mintmark repunching alone is ambiguous. No significant reverse die markers have been noted beyond the repunching itself. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1929-S 1c WRPM-009, this variety has no known cross-references to other catalogs. Collectors examining 1929-S wheat cents should focus first on the mintmark area under magnification, looking for the secondary S image displaced to the southeast of the final position.
