Description
The 1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of just 9,958, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. Issued in 1928 to mark the 150th anniversary of Captain James Cook's arrival in the Hawaiian Islands in 1778. The obverse features a bust of Captain James Cook facing left, who first made contact with the Hawaiian Islands in 1778, while the reverse displays a Hawaiian chieftain standing with an outstretched arm, with Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach in the background. Designed by Juliette May Fraser & Chester Beach. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9309. The Hawaiian Half Dollar is one of the key rarities in the classic commemorative series, with a low mintage of 10,008 and most examples showing signs of circulation from heavy use in Hawaii's tropical climate. Gem uncirculated specimens are exceptionally rare and command substantial premiums.
