Description

Revised from an earlier listing and rated I-2 R-6, this 1927-S Peace Dollar variety combines doubled leaves on the reverse with multiple rim cuds — a pointed rim cud reaching the bottom of the 2 in the date, tiny breaks at the letters IN, and a broad rim cud at Y in LIBERTY. The presence of three separate rim breaks across different portions of the coin's periphery documents advanced die deterioration where the rim section fractured at multiple stress points. Heavy die file lines around BERT and the date, with long lines extending to the right of E, indicate that Mint workers attempted to maintain the die despite its progressing structural failure. The 1927-S Peace Dollar is one of the key dates of the series, with a mintage of only 866,000 — the lowest San Francisco production figure and one of the scarcest Peace Dollars in all grades. The combination of extreme rarity (R-6) with a low-mintage key date creates a variety that very few collectors will ever encounter, as both the base coin population and the specific die variety survival rate are severely limited. Multiple rim cuds alongside doubled leaves make VAM-5A among the more visually dramatic Peace Dollar varieties. Tiny breaks at IN and broad rim cud at Y in LIBERTY that barely goes into field on late die states.
