1927-S VAM-5
Error
Description
Discovered by David Close and revised in 2016, the 1927-S Peace Dollar VAM-5 is classified as II 1, B2e reverse (Doubled Leaves #2), rated I-2 R-5. The obverse carries a die gouge at the top right of the designer's initials, shared with the later die state of VAM-1J and VAM-3. The reverse shows slight doubling at the bottom edge of the upper olive leaf, the lower middle olive leaves, the lower branch, the upper leaves of the lower olive leaf sprig, and the back of two rear leg feathers. The doubling is not as strong as VAM-3, which serves as a useful comparative benchmark for attribution. The Peace Dollar's distinctive high-relief design with the TRVST motto and seated eagle with PEACE inscription provides the canvas for this subtle leaf doubling, and collectors should examine the olive branch area under magnification to distinguish the secondary impressions from normal die flow.
