Description

Heavy die file lines across both the obverse and reverse set VAM-1H apart from other 1927-S Peace Dollar die pairings. Discovered in April 2010 by Felix G (Tekkie1), this variety is cataloged as 1H II 1, B2a with the classification Die File Lines Top Obverse and Reverse, carrying an I-2 interest rating and R-5 rarity. On the obverse, aggressive file marks cut through the tiara rays, the back of Liberty`s neck, the lower hair, and below the R in LIBERTY — suggesting a Mint worker filed broadly to remove clash marks from multiple zones of the portrait side. The reverse tells a parallel story, with heavy file lines visible around the eagle where clash marks would have transferred from the obverse die. The 1927-S already commands attention as a lower-mintage Peace Dollar, with San Francisco producing significantly fewer pieces than Philadelphia that year. VAM-1H`s die file lines add a layer of production history: physical evidence of a Mint employee`s intervention to salvage a clashed die pair rather than discard it, preserving the dies for continued service at the cost of leaving permanent filed textures in the fields.
