Description

Third in the Wexler Team's catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1927 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-003 (Wexler Variety ID: 1927-D 1¢ WRPM-003) documents another instance where the D mintmark punch was applied more than once to a working die. Each RPM in the Wexler system represents a unique die — meaning at least three separate 1927-D obverse dies received imperfect initial mintmark placements requiring correction. The hand-punching method used throughout this era demanded considerable skill: the engraver positioned a hardened steel letter punch against the working die face and struck it with a hammer, embedding the D into the die. If the angle, depth, or position was unsatisfactory, a second blow was delivered after repositioning. Lincoln Wheat Cents of 1927 were struck in the standard 95% copper composition at 3.11 grams, and Denver's production contributed significantly to national cent circulation during a period of prosperity. This variety has not yet received cross-references in other attribution catalogs, making the Wexler designation the primary identification. Collectors should compare all three documented WRPMs to ensure correct attribution.
