Description
Carrying the exceptionally rare R-6 rating, the 1926-S VAM-1M is a Beveled Hair Top variety on the Peace dollar from the San Francisco Mint, discovered in 2010. Classified as 1M II1 - B2a (Beveled Hair Top) I-3 R-6, with an estimated 13 to 30 surviving examples, this ranks among the rarest documented Peace dollar die marriages. The obverse, designated II1, displays die file lines and a beveled field above the hair below RT in LIBERTY, where the die surface was aggressively worked to create an angled transition between the hair detail and the surrounding field. Additional die file lines appear in front of the forehead, applied to remove die clash marks from a previous mishap. On the reverse, classified B2a, heavy die file lines mark the locations of die clash marks, and slight doubling appears on the middle olive branch, the bottom of the eagle's right foot, and the bottom of DOL. The 1926-S is already one of the lower-mintage Peace dollar issues, and the R-6 rarity of this particular die marriage makes the VAM-1M a significant find for any Peace dollar specialist fortunate enough to encounter one.
