Description

Discovered in 2017, the 1926-S Peace Dollar VAM-1AF2 documents a die clash variety where clash marks from the reverse design were partially managed through die polishing. When obverse and reverse dies strike each other without an intervening planchet, each die receives an incuse impression of the opposing design — clash marks. On this obverse die, the transferred 'E' clash mark was polished out or worn away through die usage, but the clash marks near the letter R remain visible, creating an asymmetric pattern where some clash evidence was removed while other traces survived. The "2" suffix in the 1AF2 designation indicates a sub-variety within the 1AF group, differentiating this specific die state from the base classification. Rated R-6 (13 to 30 estimated known), this is among the scarcer Peace Dollar varieties, with limited survivors reflecting either a short production window or efficient die removal after the clash event. Classified as die pair II1-B2a with an interest rating of I-2. The 1926-S San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar had a mintage of 6,980,000 — one of the lower figures in the series. Struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on de Francisci's design. Examine the obverse near R for surviving clash marks, and note the absence of the 'E' clash mark that was polished away. =1926-S VAM-1AF2 Die Gouge B= Discovery 2017 1AF2 II1 - B2a (Die Gouge B) I-2 R-6 Obverse II1 - Die clash 'E' mark polished out or removed from die wear.
