Description

Also discovered by Jody Faust and sharing the same doubled olive leaves and berries as VAM-6A, the 1926 Philadelphia Peace dollar VAM-8A is classified as 8A II1 - B2a, I-2 R-5 with an estimated 13 to 30 known examples. While VAM-6A was renumbered from a former VAM-1F designation, VAM-8A has carried its 8A classification from the outset, representing a distinct die pairing that exhibits the same reverse hub doubling and similar obverse feed-finger scratches below N-G of IN GOD. The two varieties share their doubled reverse hub, which is why the olive leaf and berry doubling appears identical, but they were struck from different die pairings — meaning the specific obverse or reverse working die differs between the two. Differentiating VAM-6A from VAM-8A requires careful examination of incidental die markers unique to each working die, such as polishing lines, contact marks, or minor gouges acquired during die preparation.
