Description

Rated I-3 for significance — higher than most Peace Dollar VAMs — this 1926 Philadelphia Mint variety exhibits extensive doubled hair strands on the right side and bottom of Liberty's hair in the field above TRVST. The doubling extends to the lower edges of designer Anthony de Francisci's initials, the top loop of the 6 in the date, and TRV of TRVST, demonstrating broad displacement across multiple obverse elements. Discovered in December 1998 by veteran VAM researcher Herb Zepke, VAM-4 carries plate notation 4 II 3 B2a with rarity R-4 (scarce). The I-3 importance rating designates the variety as significant within the VAM system, a step above the I-2 rating most Peace Dollar varieties carry. The breadth of doubling — touching hair, initials, date, and motto simultaneously — indicates substantial hub displacement during die preparation. Herb Zepke's contributions to Peace Dollar research span decades, and his identification of this doubled hair variety added one of the more important entries to the 1926 Philadelphia catalog.
