1926-P VAM-3B

Description

VAM-3B on the 1926 Philadelphia Peace Dollar carries an outstanding rarity rating of I-2 R-6 and was discovered in 2017 by Leroy Van Allen (LVA) and BJV. The variety is catalogued as 3B, obverse II2, reverse B2a, with the attribution: Doubled 6, Die File Lines Nose and Upper Lip. The 6 in the date shows doubling. The obverse is further distinguished by slightly diagonal die file lines on the nose and upper lip of Liberty's portrait — lines left by a die-finishing file used to remove roughness from the die surface. This die state occurs before VAM-3A, which carries a die gouge below the V in the reverse legend, establishing the relative sequence of the 3A and 3B die states. The Peace Dollar uses the archaic spelling TRVST rather than TRUST. An R-6 rating indicates extreme rarity, with the known population estimated at fewer than 13 examples.
