1926-D VAM-2A

Description

Discovered by Tom Petrosie in December 2024, this Denver Mint 1926 Peace Dollar carries the VAM-2A designation under die classification 2 II 1 with reverse die B2b. The obverse exhibits a prominent die break in the left field accompanied by displacement above the letters IN, a feature dramatic enough that the displacement across the break is visible without magnification simply by tilting the coin in the light to catch the raised metal. Die breaks of this nature occur when subsurface cracks propagate through the die face, allowing the separated section to shift under striking pressure, producing raised displaced metal on the resulting coins. On the reverse, the B2b die displays a mintmark slightly tilted to the right relative to its standard upright orientation. The combination of an easily visible displaced die break on the obverse and the tilted D mintmark on the reverse provides two straightforward diagnostics for attributing VAM-2A, making it accessible even to collectors new to Peace Dollar VAM attribution.
