Discovered by Jay Galst in November 1978, the 1926-D Peace Dollar VAM-2 is designated "Tilted Right" for the orientation of its D mintmark on the reverse. Classified as II 1 - B2b with an I-3 interest rating and R-3 rarity, this variety documents a D mintmark tilted to the right at normal height — a positional variant resulting from how the mintmark punch was applied to the working die at the Denver Mint. Prior to 1990, mintmarks were hand-punched into individual working dies, and variations in the angle, depth, and position of each punch application created the mintmark varieties that the VAM system catalogs. The B2b reverse die classification specifically denotes this tilted-right D placement, distinguishing it from the normal upright orientation seen on the baseline VAM-1. With an R-3 rarity rating, this variety has an estimated population of 201 to 500 known specimens, making it among the more available Peace Dollar VAMs and an accessible entry point for collectors building a 1926-D die marriage set.
