1926-D VAM-1L

Description

A dramatic horizontal die break across the bottom of Liberty's neck with displaced design on the left side makes VAM-1L of the 1926-D Peace Dollar a visually striking structural failure. Discovered in 2019 by colwillys and cataloged as II 1 B2a with I-2 importance and R-5 rarity estimating 1 to 5 known specimens, this variety is both scarce and compelling. The die crack traverses horizontally across Liberty's neck at its lowest point, and on the left side it has progressed to a full break where the die steel separated, allowing metal to displace into a raised ridge with distorted design features. Die breaks on portrait elements are particularly collectible because they visibly alter the primary design. The designation as neck point break number 2 indicates a second documented instance of this specific failure location. The Denver Mint struck Peace Dollars from 1922 through 1927, and the 1926-D had a mintage of just over 2.3 million. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this Denver Peace Dollar preserves a structural die failure that dramatically interrupts Liberty's portrait at the neck.
