Description

Discovered in 2019 by Bill Wolverton, the 1926-D VAM-1K Peace dollar is classified as II 1 - B2a, I-2 R-6 in the Van Allen-Mallis system. The R-6 rarity rating indicates only an estimated 1 to 12 examples are known, placing this among the scarcer Peace dollar die varieties. The primary diagnostic is a die crack running from Liberty's neck upward over and above the numeral 1, with displaced field metal visible above the 19 in the date. Some specimens also exhibit a diagonal crack through the A of DOLLAR on the reverse, representing a later die state. Denver produced just 2,348,700 Peace dollars in 1926, a lower output that already limits the available population, and the R-6 rarity within that production run makes confirmed examples genuinely elusive. Die cracks with displaced field metal indicate advanced die fatigue where the fractured segments shift slightly, forcing metal into the gap during striking and creating raised irregular lines on the coin's surface. =1926-D VAM-1K Die Break 19= Discovery 2019 by Bill Wolverton.
