Description
Discovered by Jody Faust in December 2017, the 1926-D Peace Dollar VAM-1F2 features a die break in the field below and extending into the letters WE on the obverse (die II1), accompanied by fine vertical die gouges below IN G from feed finger contact, paired with reverse die B2a. Cataloged with an I-2 interest level and R-5 rarity rating, this variety combines two distinct die imperfections — the structural die break and the mechanical feed finger gouges — providing multiple diagnostic markers for attribution. Die field breaks that extend into lettering create particularly visible raised features on struck coins because the break disrupts both the flat field and the raised letter surfaces. The 1926-D, struck at the Denver Mint, is one of the lower-mintage regular-issue Peace Dollars, and VAM varieties from this date are actively sought by series specialists. Feed finger gouges below the motto IN GOD WE TRVST are common across Peace Dollar dies but serve as useful secondary identification markers.
