1925-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Buffalo Nickels, struck in a copper-nickel (75%/25%) composition from 1913 through 1938, feature a bold mintmark on the reverse below the words FIVE CENTS. These mintmarks were applied individually by hand to each working die, a process that produced a variety of positional and repunching anomalies across the series. The 1925-S Buffalo Nickel RPM-003 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-069 and DMR-004. The mintmark displacement is S/S East, indicating the original S punch was applied slightly west of its final position, with the secondary ghost impression remaining east of the primary S. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed. Stage B (MDS) is documented on the reverse side with a very light die state (VLDS) noted for the obverse. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. The James Earle Fraser design — featuring a Native American portrait and an American bison — provides a distinctive artistic backdrop for variety study, though the mintmark itself on Buffalo Nickels often shows significant wear due to the design's high-relief striking demands. The S/S East displacement on RPM-003 should be examined at the western base of the mintmark for the secondary ghost impression.
