Description

The 1925 Buffalo Nickel WMDO-001 is a master die doubling obverse variety that differs fundamentally from ordinary working-die doubled dies. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA MD-1-O-IV, with the Wexler designation 1925-P,D,S 5¢ WMDO-001, the doubling affects Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco coins alike. When doubling originates at the master die stage rather than a working die, the hubbing impression transfers to every hub, every working die, and every coin struck from them. All 1925 Buffalo Nickels should therefore exhibit the indicated doubling, though apparent differences from coin to coin arise from hub wear, die wear, and die abrasion during production. James Earle Fraser's iconic design — the Native American obverse and the American bison reverse — makes the Buffalo Nickel one of the most artistically celebrated U.S. series. Master die doubling varieties like WMDO-001 add collectible depth to dates already popular with type collectors.

  • Discovered by Bill Van Note Cross References: CONECA: MD-1-O-IV Comments: Because this doubling traces back to the master die, all coins for this date should show the indicated doubling. There may seem to be slight differences in the doubling from coin to coin, but these differences will be due to hub, die, and coin wear and abrading of the dies.
