Description

Holding the lead catalog position for the date, this VarietyVista-documented 1924-S Buffalo Nickel shows an S/S Southwest displacement. Specimen submission is requested for new color, high-magnification digital photographs. Die markers UVC-063 / DMR-002: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B with a die chip in the upper loop of the mintmark at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die chip in the S mintmark's upper loop at MDS provides a distinctive diagnostic beyond the positional displacement. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1924-S had a mintage of only 6.256 million pieces, making it a better-date issue in James Earle Fraser's Buffalo series and more challenging to locate with variety diagnostics intact.
