Error
Description
Jim Bailey discovered VAM-1W of the 1922-S Peace dollar in 2010. Designated II 1 B1a as Die File Lines at ER, this variety carries a rarity rating of I-3 R-5. The obverse displays heavy die file lines at the ER in LIBERTY, indicating deliberate die finishing or reworking at the San Francisco Mint. On the reverse, polished rays appear to the right of the olive leaves with missing portions of the ray at the right tip of the lower leaves. The third ray above ONE has been shortened away from the wing end through die overpolishing. VAM-1W uses different dies than VAMs 1B, 1J, 1L, and 5A, establishing it as a distinct die marriage within the 1922-S Peace dollar series. The R-5 rarity rating indicates an estimated surviving population of 30 to 75 pieces, placing this among the scarcer recognized varieties for the date. Peace dollar reverses feature the word TRVST in the motto IN GOD WE TRVST, using the classical Latin V in place of U.
