1922-S VAM-1P

Description

Originally designated VAM-1P, this 1922-S Peace Dollar variety has been eliminated from the active VAM census and replaced by two separate designations: VAM-1E1 and VAM-1E2. The elimination occurred when further study determined that the original single designation actually encompassed two distinct die pairings warranting independent catalog entries. Before elimination, VAM-1P was described as featuring a long vertical fine die scratch through the E of WE extending down near the top of the 9, accompanied by fine vertical lines above WE. Discovered in 2010 and cataloged as 1P II1 B2a with I-2 importance and R-5 rarity, the variety documented a distinctive obverse die scratch pattern. The San Francisco Mint struck Peace Dollars from 1922 through 1926 and again in 1934 and 1935, and the 1922-S is the inaugural San Francisco Peace Dollar. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, collectors encountering specimens matching the VAM-1P description should attribute them to either VAM-1E1 or VAM-1E2 based on the refined diagnostics established when this designation was split. The elimination reflects the ongoing refinement process inherent to the VAM cataloging system.
