Description

The 1922-S VAM-1N is classified as Die File Lines ONE, a San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar variety discovered in July 2009. The die pair is designated 1N II 1 · B1a, with an importance rating of I-2 and rarity of R-5 (estimated 200-400 known). On the reverse (B1a), heavy die file lines appear at ONE and below OL in DOLLAR — these file marks were intentionally applied to the die surface to remove evidence of a die clash, where obverse design elements had transferred onto the reverse die during an unprotected strike. Die filing to erase clash marks is a documented Mint practice, and the resulting file lines are collected as a variety because they record the die's service history and the Mint's corrective intervention. The discovery coin is graded ANACS MS62, providing a reference point for this variety in Mint State preservation.
